Prosecutors are seeking Steve Bannon, Trump’s former adviser, to serve a six-month prison sentence

Federal prosecutors want Steve Bannon, a former adviser to President Donald Trump, to receive a six-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress, according to a recommendation filed Monday. In addition to serving time, the government wants him to pay $200,000 in fines.

“For his sustained and bad faith contempt of Congress, the defendant should be sentenced to six months in prison, the upper end of the sentencing guideline range, and fined $200,000” prosecutors wrote in their court filing Monday.

Prosecutors said Bannon did not fully comply with the probation office in its pre-sentence investigation, writing that the former aide “freely answered questions about his family, professional life, personal history and health. But the defendant refused to disclose his financial records, insisting instead that he is willing and able to pay any fine imposed, including the maximum fine for each conviction count.”

They added: “The rioters who invaded the Capitol on January 6 did not just attack a building, they attacked the rule of law on which this country was built and through which it endures. By flouting the Select Commission’s subpoena and authority, the defendant exacerbated that attack.”

Bannon, the government said, received a letter saying that privilege may be an issue, but that letter did not state that any specific documents were withheld because Donald Trump’s attorney was not sure there were any privileged documents or information. The government added that the former president “did not believe the defendant had immunity from testimony.”
